Introducing the
CM2020/CM2021 HDMI/DVI Port Protection Devices
MediaGuard™ Devices Provide Unsurpassed Functional Integration and ESD Protection

Product Overview
California Micro Devices introduces the CM2020 and CM2021, two new port protection devices designed specifically for HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface and DVI (Digital Visual Interface) interface applications. These devices, part of California Micro Devices' MediaGuard™ family of products, provide a complete ESD protection solution for HDMI and DVI interfaces found in digital consumer devices such as digital TVs, DVD and recordable DVD players, flat panel monitors and set top boxes. These devices provide ESD protection, level shifting, backdrive and over current protection and are supplied in a TSSOP package with 0.5mm lead spacing to optimize the PCB interconnect layout between the connector and the SOC port pins.

The CM2020 and CM20201 devices are supplied in 38 pin TSSOP package, providing up to 40% savings in board space when compared to a discrete solution. Both devices are available with leaded and lead-free finishing.

Product Features
The CM2020 and CM2021 provide ESD protection for 12 data lines and feature the industry's lowest channel capacitance at 0.9pF (typ) and 1.2pF (max). In addition, these devices boast tight intrapair matching of the internal diodes, to within 0.05pF, resulting in very low intrapair skew, critical for HDMI compliance. Signal attenuation at 1080p HDTV resolutions (750MHz) is less than 0.1dB, and signal attenuation at the maximum HDMI frequency of 1.65GHz is less than 1dB.

CM2020 Insertion Loss vs. Frequency

The internal layout of MediaGuard™ devices has been designed to minimize inductance as well as capacitance, resulting a self-resonance frequency beyond 5 GHz.

Other key features and benefits include:

  • IEC61000-4-2 Level 4 protection (8kV contact, 15kV air discharge);
  • Multi-strike capability to withstand > 1000 ESD strikes without performance degradation;
  • Very fast sub 1nS response time;
  • Low 9V clamp voltage;
  • Ultra-low capacitance on TMDS lines:
    • 0.9 pF I/O to ground capacitance (industry’s lowest capacitance diode arrays);
    • 1.2 pF maximum capacitance;
  • 0.05 pF intrapair capacitance matching;
  • Self-resonance frequency at 5.5 GHz with attenuation < 1dB at highest data frequencies.

The CM2020 is intended for use on transmitter port interfaces such as those found on DVD recorders and set top boxes. This devices includes overcurrent output protection and back drive protection. The CM2021 is intended for receiver applications such as digital TVs and includes backdrive protection.

Product Applications
Applications for these devices includes PCs, consumer electronics, set top boxes, displays and digital television.
