CM2010 VGA Port Protection with Integrated Sync Buffers
8kV ESD Protection, Sync Line Level-Shifting, Buffering and Impedance Matching in a Compact 10-lead MSOP

Lead-free Solution

Product Overview
California Micro Devices introduces the CM2010, a highly integrated Application Specific Integrated Passive™ (ASIP™) device that provides ESD protection and sync line buffering, level-shifting and impedance matching for VGA port applications
. The CM2010 provides 3 very low capacitance channels of electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection for high speed video signals. It also features 2 channels of buffering, level-shifting and impedance matching for HSYNC and VSYNC signals, providing up to 24mA drive current at either 3.3 or 5 volts. The CM2010 is an ideal solution for notebook and desktop computers, graphics cards, set top boxes and other host platforms that have VGA and/or DVI-I outputs.

The CM2010 is supplied in a 10 lead MSOP package and is available with optional lead free finishing.

Product Features
The CM2010 is utilized between the video graphics controller of a PC, graphics card, or set top box, and the analog video output (VGA port or DVI-I port). The CM2010 replaces as many as 9 discrete analog and passive devices and provides ESD protection for high speed video signals and level shifting, buffering and impedance matching for the SYNC signals.

The video signals are ESD protected by low capacitance (4pF typical) dual rail clamp diodes. These diodes provide ±8kV contact ESD protection per IEC61000-4-2, level 4. Additionally, ESD protection of ±2kV (HBM) is provided on the SYNC pins. An integrated Zener diode diode also helps reduce the clamping voltage, which is critical for minimizing soft errors that cause a system to crash and require it to be rebooted.

Two non-inverting drivers buffer the HSYNC and VSYNC signals from the video controller IC (SYNC1 and SYNC2). These driver accept low voltage input levels and convert them to CMOS output levels that typically swing between GROUND and V
CC_SYNC. The SYNC driver outputs are VESA Video Signal Standard (VSIS) - Version 1, Rev 2 compatible. The buffers can be operated at either 3.3V or 5V for legacy VESA compatibility due to their full GROUND to VCC swing. The output impedance of the SYNC drivers is adjustable via external series resistors (RT) can can be adjusted over a wide range from 15Ω to 100Ω. Separate positive supply rails for the VIDEO and SYNC channels facilitate interfacing with low voltage video controller ICs to provide design flexibility in multi-supply voltage environments.

Features of the CM2010 include:

  • ESD protection, level-shifting, buffering and sync impedance matching in a single device
  • 3 channels of ESD protection for VGA VIDEO port connector pins meeting IEC-61000-4-2 Level 4 ESD requirements (±8kV contact discharge)
  • Very low loading capacitance from ESD protection diodes on VIDEO lines, 4pF typical
  • 5V drivers for HSYNC and VSYNC lines
  • Driver output impedance adjustable from 15Ω to 100Ω
  • Compact 10 lead MSOP package
  • Available with lead free finishing
