CM1424 EMI Filter Array + ESD Protection
for MultiMedia Memory Card (MMC) Interfaces

Product Overview
California Micro Devices introduces the CM1424, the industry’s first electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter array with electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection designed specifically for MultiMedia Memory Card (MMC) interfaces. The CM1424 is a three-channel EMI filter array with two dedicated channels of ESD protection, providing a complete solution for the MMC interface. This highly integrated chip scale device integrates 17 discrete components, providing up to 89% board space savings versus discrete implementations. The CM1424 utilizes California Micro Devices’ Centurion™ process for excellent EMI filtering performance with a high level of ESD protection.

The CM1424 is manufactured as a chip scale packaged (CSP) device and is available with OptiGuard™ coating for greater durability. The CM1424 is also available with preformed eutectic (63Sn/37Pb composition) or lead-free (96.8Sn2.6Ag0.6Cu composition) 0.30mm solder spheres for attachment.

Product Features
The CM1424 is designed for EMI suppression on the signal interfaces present on MultiMedia Memory Cards and digital still cameras, wireless handsets and MP3 players. The CM1424 utilizes 2-way EMI filtering with three internal pi filters (12pF/100 Ohms/12pF) capable of attenuating unwanted signals by more than 30dB over the 1GHz to 3GHz carrier frequency range. The filters feature a cut-off frequency of 130MHz, and block unwanted signals originating from internal RF components as well as harmonics generated by the MMC interface’s high-speed clock and data lines

The CM1424 offers ESD protection on the three EMI filter channels typically utilized for data and control line protection. There are 2 additional ESD-only protection channels available, one for protection of the power supply with the other available for auxiliary use. All channels are rated to withstand ESD strikes of ±15kV contact discharge per IEC61000-4-2 level 4 specification.

The CM1424 pinout was configured to facilitate flow-through routing, simplifying PCB layout and optimizing filter performance. Chip scale packaging, by nature, also offers a very low inductance ground return path, further enhancing filter and ESD protection performance when compared to discrete EMI and ESD solutions.

Features of the CM1424 include:

  • Centurion™ process technology for effective EMI filter performance and robust ESD protection
  • 3 channels of EMI Filtering with ESD protection, 2 channels of ESD-only protection
  • Greater than 30dB of attenuation at 1GHz to reject unwanted high frequency signals
  • Up to 89% board space savings versus discrete implementations
  • Space-saving, low profile CSP form factor ideal for mobile applications
  • Optional lead free finish and OptiGuard coating

Product Applications
The CM1424 family of devices is suitable for a number of applications where space as well as performance are considerations. These include:

  • MultiMedia Card slot in mobile handsets and other handheld devices such as digital still cameras and MP3 players
  • I/O port protection for mobile handsets, notebook computers, PDAs etc
  • EMI filtering for data ports in cell phones, PDAs or notebook computers
